Out of the four prominent single seater race series in Asia, there is only one that can claim the status of a true driver development series, and that is Formula Gulf 1000. A series that actually contributes to young driver development by running a driving academy, coached by professional racers, at each round of the championship.
Many single seater series market themselves as the best, or next step to achieve the young racers goal of getting to Formula One, but none of them actually provide anything tangible that either connects them to F1 or develops their skill set to climb the challenging ladder of motorsport progress.
While two of the major single seater series in Asia provide a solid platform for racers in their late teens and early twenties who are ready for Europe, Formula Gulf 1000 is perfect for young drivers graduating from karting who need to start learning the art, and science, of formula racing.
And most importantly FG1000 is the only Asian single seater series that races on 5 different circuit layouts.
Another important difference is that fat wallets don’t have any effect on the championship as series director Barry Hope explains; “We don’t allow extra testing or the option to purchase extra tyres, so no matter if your budget is bigger than other drivers, you cannot gain an advantage. The entry cost of AED226,000 is just that, no more, unless of course you need to pay for repairs. We also don’t allow anyone to touch their cars which are run to identical set-up, so there are no excuses for poor driving”.
A further bonus for young drivers is the payment plan that Formula Gulf offer. Unlike other series, you don’t have to pay the full price upfront in one hit.
ADVANTAGES OF FG1000:
Whilst Formula Gulf 1000 is a race series, it is primarily a ‘Racer’s Academy’, that has helped produce some prominent Asian talents who are well on their way to professional drives in international major series. Top drivers of FG1000 have gone on to race in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, GT Asia, BRDC F4, FIA F3 and more.
Each FG1000 driver works with Gulfsport’s professional driver coach between every track session, analysing performance data at a detailed level, looking at braking pressures and points, steering inputs and gear changes. Their best lap time is compared to the best lap time of the fastest driver overall, not their own time.
Media exposure is very important to a young racer, and the Formula Gulf 1000 Series has one of the best media and PR structures in Asia. A regular fixture in many major motorsport publications and news sites across the world, each race is filmed and packaged for broadcast on a number of channels online and on cable TV.
So if you really want to get involved in a series that is hands on in developing your driving and that produces results based purely on driver skill, then Formula Gulf 1000 is for you.
