Another electrifying year of motorsport is set to begin as the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season kicks off alongside the FIA Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix this weekend in Shanghai, the home of Porsche China.

PCCA2016 group photoA total of 24 drivers from three continents and nine countries and territories will launch their pursuit of glory in 2016 as they race identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (Type 991) racing cars around one of the country’s most uniquely designed and technical tracks. The Shanghai International Circuit will provide the backdrop against which the high-speed action will take place as the Carrera Cup Asia’s young, competitive line-up duke it out in the championship’s opening double-header.

The competition starts on Saturday with a single qualifying session where the fastest lap times will set the grid for Round 1 later that day, with the second fastest lap for each driver dictating grid positions for Round 2 on Sunday. Raising the stakes even further, one additional championship point will be awarded to the driver with the fastest lap in qualifying and in each of the two 12-lap races over the weekend in both the overall and Class B championships.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia’s youngest driver, Nico Menzel of PICC Team StarChase, will be looking to build on his strong performance at the season’s official test session last month. After finishing 3rd in the overall championship last season the 18 year old will know all too well the importance of laying down his title credentials early on in what promises to be a challenging season.

Fresh from winning the Porsche Carrera Cup France in 2015, 24-year-old Maxime Jousse of Kamlung Racing is an intriguing late addition to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia line-up. The Frenchman will be hoping that his experience behind the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (Type 991) will allow him to hit the ground running in his Carrera Cup Asia debut.

PCCA2016 line upAll eyes, too, will be on Andrew Tang of the newly established Porsche China Junior Team. The 21 year old will compete under the guidance of the world record holder for Porsche wins and last year’s Carrera Cup Asia runner-up, Craig Baird. The New Zealander is one of four star coaches provided by Porsche China over the course of the inaugural year of the Porsche China Junior Programme.

This weekend’s roster also contains a strong showing of Chinese participants, who will be looking to make an impact at their home circuit. The seven-strong contingent of racers underlines the Porsche Carrera Cup’s commitment to building a local motorsport culture and providing a platform to develop local racing talent.

One of these racers, Zhang Da Sheng of Funn88 Team Sunfonda, will be attempting to push on from his last season of racing in Europe at what will be his fourth tilt at the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia overall championship after finishing in 6th place in 2014. The young racer posted some great lap times at the official test days at the Shanghai International Circuit last month and he will be looking to convert this into championship points at Rounds 1 and 2 at the Shanghai International Circuit.

Zhang will be joined by compatriots Bao Jinlong of Zheng Tong Auto, series debutant Cui Yue of Team Jebsen and Zhang Zhen Dong of Team Porsche Holding, all gunning for overall championship points. Another series newcomer, Mitchell Gilbert of Absolute Racing, completes the line-up of professional racers.

The Class B championship looks as hard to call as ever, where last season’s champion Yuey Tan of Team Jebsen returns to face newcomers and fellow championship returnees. One such new face is Yuan Bo from Absolute Racing, whose lap times at the season’s test session in March showed the raw speed that he is capable of.

PCCA2016 cup car02Storming off the grid alongside them will be Vutthikorn Inthraphuvasak of est cola Thailand, Modena Motorsports’ Wayne and John Shen, Wang Xi of Team Formax, Sontanya Kunplome from Racing Spirit Thailand, Fung Yui Sum of Arrows Racing, OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia, Li Chao from Team Betterlife, Jeffery Chiang from RC Racing, Paul Tresidder, Samson Chan, Siu Yuk Lung of LKM Racing and Suttiluck Buncharoean from True Visions Motorsports Thailand.

“We are delighted to be kicking off our season here in Shanghai, China. The international line-up of young racers means, once more, that competition for the podium will be high”, said Alexandre Gibot, Motorsport Manager for Porsche China. “Everyone will be looking to get off the mark in both the overall and Class B championships, which means we can expect to witness some intense battles on the track all throughout the weekend.”

As the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia gets ready to blast off into 2016 at one of the biggest race weekends in Chinese motorsport, the region’s leading sports car competition is set for a 14th season of absorbing rivalries, incredible circuits and pure, unadulterated wheel-to-wheel racing.
