Two of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia’s top-ranking young drivers – Porsche China Junior Team’s Andrew Tang and Fun88 Team SunFonda’s Zhang Da Sheng – will enter the international arena this weekend as they head to Hockenheim, Germany to compete in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Challenge.

Representing the Porsche China Junior Team in its first participation in the event, the pair will make Mobil 1 Supercup history as the first all-Asian team to compete in Porsche’s top one-make competition, which will see drivers from around a dozen countries including Germany, UK and France pilot Porsche 911 GT3 (Type 991) cars to test their mettle against some of the world’s toughest competition.

It is both racers’ first time competing at the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Challenge in Hockenheim, though Zhang Da Sheng got his first international race experience last year after travelling to Belgium to compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup 24 Hours of Spa 2015.  It’s also both racers’ first time ever driving the historic Hockenheimring circuit,  known for its hairpin turns and technical demands.

They join the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup Challenge, which will be part of the F1 race weekend at the end of July,  after experiencing huge successes at the Chiang International Circuit in Thailand earlier this month, with Tang and Zhang Da Sheng respectively securing first and third place victories in Round 5.

Offering onsite wisdom to the two young racers will be Champion driver and Porsche China Junior Star Coach Earl Bamber, who will be guiding Tang for the first time since the season kickoff in Shanghai.

“Representing Asia at such a prestigious event like the Mobil1 Supercup is really an honour,” Andrew Tang said.  “It looks like it’ll be a very fun and challenging track to drive on and I think the level of the competition will be extremely high as it always is when Porsche is involved. I intend to go into the race weekend like a sponge – I want to absorb as much as possible and learn from this awesome experience.”

Excited about the prospect of seeing two promising young drivers from the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia enter the international arena, Alexandre Gibot, Manager of Motorsport for Porsche China said  “This is a great opportunity for our two young drivers.  Not only are they representing the Porsche China Junior Programme on the global stage, they are making sports history as the first all-Asian team to compete at the Mobil1 Supercup Challenge in Hockenheim.”

“Motorsport that pushes the envelope is what our fans and supporters have come to expect from the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. It is a great pleasure to see this tradition continue.”

The qualifying round for the Mobil1 Supercup Challenge begins in Hockenheim at 12:25pm (local time UTC+2) on Saturday, July 30, with the race taking place on Sunday July 31 at 11:30am (local time UTC+2).  Follow the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and sport auto on social media as the first all-Asian squad tackles the Hockenheim race track.
