Bad luck didn’t dampen Nicolas Rowe’s determination to win. The Cebu Pacific Air by PRT driver celebrated twice on the top of podium at Shanghai International Circuit.
Second in Race 2 was Absolute Racing Philip Hamprecht of Germany, with 17-year-old Australian Aidan Read, of Eurasia Motorsport taking his first podium in the new season. Both of them managed to maintain the same order in Race 3.
Top performing Chinese Driver was Absolute Racing’s Zheng Shangguan, 10th and 4th place in both Race 2 and 3.
After 3 of the 18 FMCS races for 2015, Rowe’s due of wins put him on top of the Drivers Classification with a narrow gap of 1 point ahead of Hamprecht, who has a two point advantage over Kim. Eurasia Motorsport’s Aidan Read, lies fourth, 5 points adrift of Kim and another 5 points in lead with Absolute Racing’s Zheng Shangguan.
In the Chinese Drivers Classification, Zheng Shangguan, the top 2 finisher in the opening race, has a nine point lead ahead of Jeffrey Ye with Super License’s driver Hong Shijie third.
Fellow Italian Carlo Mantori and Angelo Negro are the top two in the Masters Trophy Classification with 4 point gap in between and followed by Japanese driver Takashi Hata from Super License, 8 point short.
Cebu Pacific Air by PRT leads the Team Classification with a eight point lead over Absolute Racing, with Eurasia Motorsport in third.
The 6-lap Race 2 was spared of downfalls as of yesterday. Rowe secured his lead by overtaking Kim and Zheng soon after the lights went off and took home his first victory of this season. “I started the 3rd place and got a reasonable start, got pass Zheng on T7 and got pass Kim at the next lap on T14. From there I just put my head down and tried to get the race,” said Rowe.
Starting from the first row alongside with Kim, Zheng made contact with Rowe at Turn 7 and ran off the track. When he rejoined the battle, he lost his position to Hamprecht and Read who seized the opportunity and got passed him. “It was quite an action packed race,” said Read. “A bit difficult race like yesterday. Made up a couple of spots at the start. Got to 4th at the first lap and hunt Kim down at 3rd and make a move on him. From then on, just poll up the gap and kept going. It was a compact little race and there were a lot of going on.”
Pole sitter Kim was also unable to stop this pair after putting up a hard defending and crossed the line on 4th. His team mate Jeffrey Ye made up ground, crossing the line fifth from ten on the grid. He was the fastest Chinese driver in Race 2.
Race 3 turned out be another comfortable victory of the Australian driver Rowe. The 10-lap race saw a wheel-perfect performance from Rowe who led from pole to flag.
The fleet behind him had been tangled in the battle for 2 more laps. Kim was busy defending his 2nd position, but backed down from the waving attacks from Read, Hamprecht and later Zheng. Hamprecht managed to get by Read in the following lap and took to the flag as the runner up. With the gap between them being built up, Read was settled for another podium finish.
At later stage of the race, Cebu Pacific Air by PRT’s Jeffrey caught up and kept pressuring Kim till they crossed the line by a narrow miss of 0.065 second.
The same weekend also witnessed another triumphs of FMCS alumni. The champion of 2015 season Martin Rump stormed Audi R8 LMS Cup at its season opening race, celebrating on top of the podium at his debut of the series.
After a successful season start in Shanghai, FMCS continues its home trip, heading to Zhuhai International Circuit from June 17-19 for Race 4-6.
