Instead they pioneered the use of the word “partner” or “investor” in the belief that each partner is making an “investment” in the team and are looking for a tangible return.

Race teams and drivers need to approach sponsorship partnerships in the same disciplined way as they would go racing.   It is the team, or driver, who can develop a valuable marketing platform around their participation in the sport, who will stand the better chance of continued long-term success.
